The first case of post-kala-azar dermal leishmaniasis was reported in India by ia machari in 1922. A series of cases oi tins infection were reported later on by Napier anci other workers; but not a single case has een reported from treated kala-azar cases in endemic area in China up to the presen im?Both of ns have made a careful search amo g the treated cases either from other clinics 01 1 the outpatient department of our Ka a-azai Research Station, Tsing-kiang-pu, China. ?o far we have found only three cases which showed early depigmented areas practically all over the body, about one year after treatment. Leishmania donovani in India causes visceral infection (kala-azar) and dermal infection (post-kala-azar dermal leishmaniasis). Post-kala-azar dermal leishmaniasis in visceral leishmaniasis-endemic communities in Bihar, India.

We assessed the prevalence of post-kala-azar dermal leishmaniasis (PKDL), a late cutaneous manifestation of visceral leishmaniasis (VL), in 16 VL-endemic communities in Bihar, India. The prevalence of confirmed PKDL cases was 4.4 per 10 000 individuals and 7.8 if probable cases were also considered. The clinical history and treatment of the post-kala-azar dermal leishmaniasis cases are discussed.
